ON VACATION FOR THE LORD
I don’t know about you, but I look forward to taking some kind of vacation every year. Sometimes they are stay-at-home, and sometimes I get to travel a bit. But usually there is some planninginvolved with any vacation. The time we get to vacation is so rare that we want to make sure it isn’t wasted. So here are a few suggestions to include in your vacation planning this year.
Build some rest time into your plans. Sometimes we are so busy that we come back more exhausted than when we left. However, remember that rest is not defined as the absence of work in God’s Word. Jesus tells us to come to Him and rest when we are weary. This kind of rest is when we can truly put our faith and trust in Him to handle all the problems and issues of life, as well as our basic needs. This is true rest. Maybe this vacation, you can spend some time in God’s Word and get to know Him better and realize just how trustworthy He is.
Read a good book or two. Certainly the Bible is the best, but there are many other wonderful books and magazine articles that can build you up and fill you up with positive thoughts and ideas. You can find Christian books in many types including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc. If you need ideas, ask around. We have many readers in the congregation.
Get some exercise. Whether you do some walking, bicycle riding, swimming, or other exercise, it will help to rejuvenate your body and mind. Even people like me who don’t spend enough time exercising the rest of the year manage to swim and walk on vacation.
Play a game or put together a puzzle. This will help you build some new relationships or renew some existing ones. It will also keep your mind strong and fresh, and it might help you think i n new ways the rest of the year too.
Share some of your precious time helping someone else. It is so easy for us to get in a rut thinking about our own problems all the time. The best remedy for that is to find someone else who has some problems or needs some help and make their needs a higher priority than yours – at least for a little while. You will refresh yourself and the other person.
Sleep. Are you one of those people who never seem to get enough sleep? While we don’t want to spend all of our vacation sleeping, take time to get caught up a little. Sleeping is good if and when you need it.
Re-do your normal busy schedule. Perhaps you need to review your daily schedule to see if you have built in some time with God, time for serving God by serving others, and enough time for needed rest. This might be the time you need to fix that. Vacation is always a wonderful time to start a good habit.
Visit an old friend or make a new one. Whether it is a long lost relative or just an old friend you haven’t seen in a while, take the time to contact them. Seeing them in person is the best, but even letter writing or talking on the phone is good. Make the time now while you have it.
Don’t forget your church. Remember that the church keeps on running all year long and needs your support even when you are on vacation. Make sure your weekly envelopes are up-todate before you head out.
I hope you have a wonderful vacation and come back refreshed. See you when you get back.
